Speech 101 – Allaire

Extra Credit Options

 

All extra credit options are a maximum of 25 points each and will be graded. Up to TWO can be selected and turned in for credit, for a maximum of 50 points. All extra credit should be 2-3 pages minimum, typed, 12 point font, double-spaced. It may be turned in electronically to nmallaire@dmacc.edu. DUE DATE - MAY 1, 2009

 

 

  1. Attend a DMACC Speaker or a speaker off campus.  Take notes during the speaker.  Watch for nonverbal messages and the main points that the speaker makes during the speech.  Give a summary of the presenter, the style, the non-verbal communication, and the key points of the presentation.  Explain 4-5 concepts from the book/class with examples from the presentation. Turn in any handouts you receive at the presentation along with your 2-3 page review.

 

  1. Review Music Lyrics.  Find a song that has lyrics that involve an interpersonal relationship or communication issue. Print out copy of the lyrics.  Analyze the song lyrics based on your perception and the artist.  Explain 4-5 concepts from the book/class with examples from the song lyrics. Turn in the song lyrics along with your 2-3 page review.

 

  1. Review a Comic Strip or Series.  Find a relevant comic strip or series of comic strips that have an interpersonal relationship issue or communication issue as the main component. Give a description of the main characters and the situation that is presented in the comic strip. Is the comic strip funny? Why or why not?  Explain 4-5 concepts from the book/class with examples from the comic strip. Turn in the comic strip(s) along with your 2-3 page review.

 

  1. Review a Speech given on TV or the mass media. This could be an inaugural address, press conference, speech on the floor of the house or senate, etc… Take notes during the speech regarding the communication that occurs. Analyze the speech as we would in class in regards to audience, non-verbal communication, gestures, language, organization, introduction and conclusion. Explain 5-6 concepts from the book/class and how they relate to the show with examples. Give the name of the speaker along with the date and time of the speech and the channel where you watched the speech.

 

  1. Review a Television show/series. Take notes during the show about the characters and the interpersonal communication that occurs.  Give a summary of the plot of the show/series and the main characters and the main conflicts between the characters.  Tell why you picked this particular show/series. Explain 5-6 concepts from the book/class and how they relate to the show with examples. Give the name of the show along with the name of the episode and the time and channel the show can be viewed and the names of the characters with the names of the actors.
